ECCA 2017 - The Final Countdown

We can’t wait to welcome everyone to the third European Climate Change Adaptation Conference taking place between 5 – 9 June in Glasgow.

The event has been two years in the making and will bring together adaptation experts from around the world. We are excited about sharing what we’ve learnt through Adaptation Scotland and learning from what’s happening elsewhere.

Here’s a quick overview of opportunities to engage with the Sniffer staff involved in delivering the Adaptation Scotland programme and our colleagues:

Climate Ready Scotland exhibition

The conference exhibition will include a Climate Ready Scotland exhibition, stage and networking space which Adaptation Scotland and ClimatexChange are organising in partnership with the Scottish Government, Forestry Commission Scotland, Scottish Natural Heritage, Glasgow City Council, Climate Ready Clyde and Historic Environment Scotland.

Visit the exhibition area to meet the Adaptation Scotland team and hear all about Scotland’s partnership approach to adapting to climate change. A programme of special events will be running in the Climate Ready Scotland exhibition area throughout the conference – join us at 3:30pm on the 6th June for an overview of Adaptation Scotland projects and an opportunity to meet the team.

Our Sniffer colleagues will also be available in the exhibition space throughout the conference – come and hear the latest information about the Climate Ready Clyde initiative and the weathering change community engagement project.

Conference sessions

Adaptation Scotland projects feature as part of several conference sessions:

Session 4.11 – Tuesday, 16:00 – 17:45 Collaboration for transformation: inspiring stories of successful adaptation approaches in UK cities

Scotland’s cities are making impressive progress in establishing strong leadership alongside developing and implementing adaptation strategies, plans and actions. Adaptation Scotland’s Edinburgh Adapts and Aberdeen Adapts projects will feature in this session alongside examples from Climate Ready Clyde and wider UK input from London.

The session is being conveyed by Adaptation Scotland’s Climate Resilience Project Coordinator Sophie Turner and Sniffer colleague Kit England, Manager for the Climate Ready Clyde initiative.

Session 6.14 – Wednesday, 11:00 - 12:45 - Defining a Blueprint for Climate Adaptation Enabling Services - Learning from a Variety of Approaches in the UK and Ireland

Adaptation Scotland Programme Manager Anna Beswick will join colleagues from England, Northern Ireland, Wales and the Republic of Ireland in exploring different approaches to running services that enable adaptation decision making.

Session 1.9 – Wednesday, 13:45 – 15:30 - Learning from failures in communication: Sharing lessons from research and practice

Learning from failures is just as important (and often more interesting!) that learning from success. In this session Adaptation Scotland’s Science and Skills Manager Joseph Hagg will join colleagues from ClimatexChange, Climate Outreach, UKCIP and Stockholm Environment Institute and the Victoria Institute of Strategic Economic Studies in sharing lessons learned from our projects.

Our colleagues at Sniffer are also involved in a couple of other great sessions including:

Session 4.4 – Tuesday, 11:00 – 12:45 - Making change happen: Learning from practical climate projects working across communities, governance, and policy

This session will feature Sniffer’s Weathering Change project which explores community resilience in North Glasgow in the face of a changing climate. Sniffer’s Managing Director Ruth Wolstenholme will be on hand during this session to answer questions and discuss next steps with this important work.

Session 6.5 – Wednesday – 11:00 – 12:45 How climate services can enable successful urban adaptation?

Sniffer’s Climate Ready Clyde Project Manager Kit England is conveying this session which will showcase leading urban adaptation climate services that support work including retrofitting urban areas and making the most of heat related adaptation options.

Poster Exhibition

The conference will include a fantastic range of posters including one from our very own Sophie Turner. Sophie’s poster will present analysis of the adaptation section of Scotland’s Public Bodies Duties reports. The poster session is on Tuesday 6 June, 18:00 – 20:00 and will include a drinks reception.

Keep in touch even if you can’t attend the conference in person

We realise that not everyone will be able to attend the ECCA conference in person. Adaptation Scotland’s Information Support Officer David Macpherson will be summarising key messages and providing links to content throughout the conference – follow us on twitter @adaptationscot / #ecca2017 or sign up to our newsletter to ensure that don’t miss out. We will also be providing links to all of the conference content as it becomes available after the event.
